Celebrity deaths this weekend:( R.I.P

Actress Kathryn Joosten died of lung cancer on Saturday (June 2nd) at the age of 72. Joosten was best know for her role on Desperate Housewives as “plucky neighbor” Karen McCluskey and as The West Wing’s secretary Mrs. Landingham.

Her rep released a statement saying, “Kathryn passed away this morning after a valiant fight against her cancer. Her family was with her. Funeral arrangements are pending. This is a terrible loss, and she fought as hard as she could.”

Joosten seemed to successfully battle lung cancer in 2001, and had another cancerous growth successfully removed from her lung in 2009. Joosten, a former smoker, was also a vocal advocate for lung cancer awareness and research.

  • Her costar Felicity Huffman tweeted on Saturday, “All my prayers and love to Katherine (sic) Joosten’s family. Rest in peace, she was an amazing woman and a wonderful actress.”

Richard Dawson, the host of Family Feud, has died at the age of 79. His son Gary Dawson confirmed that his father passed away on Saturday (June 2nd) after battling esophageal cancer.

Gary posted a Facebook message that read, “It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my father passed away this evening from complications due to esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was an amazing talent, a loving husband, a great dad, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed but always remembered…”

Dawson hosted Family Feud from 1976-1985, and then from 1994-1995. He was also a regular on The Match Game and appeared on Hogan’s Heroes and in the movie The Running Man.

  • Dawson was dubbed “The Kissing Bandit” because he would kiss all of the female contestants on Feud — but after marrying Gretchen Johnson, who he met when she was part of a contestant family on the show — he promised to stop the smooching.
