SWEET SWEET POTATOES

Sigh…i have been craving these buggers for the longest time and was wondering why…a nutritionist had once told me cravings are a clue to what your body desperately needs and turns out i needed iron, less stress and more vitamin c..

Check out the benefits of these tatters:Image

1.  They are high in vitamin B6.  Vitamin B6 helps reduce the chemical homocysteine in our bodies.  Homocysteine has been linked with degenerative diseases, including the prevention of heart attacks.

2. They are a good source of vitamin C.  While most people know that vitamin C is important to help ward off cold and flu viruses, few people are aware that this crucial vitamin plays an important role in bone and tooth formation, digestion, and blood cell formation. It helps accelerate wound healing, produces collagen which helps maintain skin’s youthful elasticity, and is essential to helping us cope with stress. It even appears to help protect our body against toxins that may be linked to cancer.

3.  They contain Vitamin D which is critical for immune system and overall health at this time of year.  Both a vitamin and a hormone, vitamin D is primarily made in our bodies as a result of getting adequate sunlight. You may have heard about seasonal affective disorder (or SAD, as it is also called), which is linked to inadequate sunlight and therefore a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D plays an important role in our energy levels, moods, and helps to build healthy bones, heart, nerves, skin, and teeth, and it supports the thyroid gland.

4.  Sweet potatoes contain iron. Most people are aware that we need the mineral iron to have adequate energy, but iron plays other important roles in our body, including red and white blood cell production, resistance to stress, proper immune functioning, and the metabolizing of protein, among other things.

5.  Sweet potatoes are a good source of magnesium, which is the relaxation and anti-stress mineral. Magnesium is necessary for healthy artery, blood, bone, heart, muscle, and nerve function, yet experts estimate that approximately 80 percent of the population in North America may be deficient in this important mineral.

P.S. My buddy also told me they are way better for you than normal potatoes, which i have a serious love/hate relationship with, so while I try sticking to these buggers…i will keep you posted how it all works out!

# Watermelons are an excellent source of several vitamins: vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant. vitamin C, which helps strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevent cell damage, promote healthy teeth and gums and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.

# Watermelon has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable. lycopene a powerful antioxidant that helps fight heart disease and several types of cancer — prostate cancer in particular.

# A great source of potassium, which helps muscle and nerve function, helps maintain the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base balance, and helps lower the risk of high blood pressure.

LOVE this page:)almost as much as I adore Broomstick Goddesses

TIP It…..

So here are more tips to inspire and coax the HEXY back…

Take Tulsi

I know, if you are South Asian them mumster has been growing this in your backyard for yonks and you had no idea a couple of leaves could reduce your stress levels right?

Research suggests that this Ayurvedic herb, also called holy basil, may help manage levels of the stress hormone cortisol, helping to boost your mood. Look for teas and supplements in health-food stores and follow package directions.

Eat Avocados

For dry skin, incorporate more avocados into your diet. They’re rich in monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, both of which promote healthy skin. Try them on salads and sandwiches, and even in smoothies.

I love them, i dip them in my breakfast shakes, guacamole on crackers and my sister Farah used to make a mean banana and avo dessert…

Make Small Talk

Engaging in casual conversation with others may help keep you as sharp as doing a word puzzle, according to some studies. Just 10 minutes of daily chatter appears to improve mental function and preserve memory.

I talk to my dogs all the time, if it helps indulge in pet therapy, sure you will look looney but who we all are to a certain level and degree anyway right?

Eat Japanese Food

In addition to following good dental hygiene, you can help prevent cavities by adding more shiitake mushrooms and wasabi to your diet. Both foods contain compounds that help fight the bacteria that cause plaque and cavities. Like i needed any excuses to to have more sushi..right Kunali and arti?

Hydrate

To treat an acute migraine, drink a full glass of water — dehydration can trigger headaches. Even if you need to take a medication for the pain, try wrapping your head with an Ace bandage so that it covers your eyes, then lie down and breathe deeply. This often helps the pain pass more quickly.

Drink Mint Tea

Ease occasional indigestion by sipping a cup of peppermint tea after your meal. Peppermint improves the flow of bile, which moves food through the digestive tract more quickly. Use peppermint with caution if you have acid reflux; it can make that problem worse.

Wash Up

To fend off colds, washing your hands well and often is the best step you can take. Use plain soap and water and scrub for as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday to You” twice.

Drink Green Tea

Hot or iced, green tea can help rev up your workout. Its catechins, antioxidants, and caffeine help increase the metabolic generation of heat. Drink a cup about 10 minutes before exercising.

I swear by this stuff…it’s possibly 1 of the best things that i have ever done for myself:) get used to the taste…as it normally tastes like nothing anyway:)

The tips to keep you going in search to get your HEXY back…

So day 1 is hard…Climbing on that weighing scale and judging yourself is damn hard…

Thank the lord for my patient husband who holds my hand as i shriek hysterically at the scale, pout and experience my umpteenth mood swing of the day, but a couple of tips from a healthy sister and sister in law help…

BE POSITIVE….easy for them say in their perfect, toned bodies…but they are right. Believing in yourself, taking your promise seriously and just sticking to a goal really helps…

so I promise to not loathe myself every time something naughty passes my lips or get depressed about it but instead get on that exercise bike in the house or head off for a walk to burn some calories.

Anyway here are some tips, i’ll keep them coming right? Right….

Rub Your Temples

Tame tension headaches by rubbing peppermint oil, Tiger Balm, or white flower oil into your temples. All three remedies contain menthol, which has analgesic properties.

and with all that head bashing you are doing right now, Lord knows you need this tip….

Enjoy Ginger

The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain. Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

with my cold at the moment, i add mine to my green tea with a wee bit of honey as it soothes my throat…every time i take a sip, it’s like my throat is having an orgasm…i love it!

Embrace Bitters

Combat a yen for sugar by following a Chinese medicine approach: Eat foods such as endive, radicchio, cooked greens, and olives. I love olives and honestly from this list…i find them the easiest to snack on …

Go Fish

If you suffer from dry eyes, up your seafood intake. Salmon, sardines, and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids, which the body uses to produce tears, among other things. Research suggests that people who consume higher amounts of these fats are less likely to have dry eyes.

Since i can’t make fish everyday i pop a pill…an omega pill…

Pop a Probiotic

get your daily dose of “good” bacteria (for example, Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium) may help restore the balance the of bacteria living in the female genital tract and inhibit the growth of yeast in women with recurrent infections.

Foods such as naturally fermented sauerkraut, kimchi (GOD i miss THAILAND), and kefir, as well as yogurt with active cultures, also contain these bacteria.

I snack on yogurt and cranverries everytime i want a sweet snack…p.s. ialso go for natural yogurt to keep those sugars and processed junk at bay…man i feel proud…but i am not a health expert….

P.S.

I am really not a health expert…as anal know it alls will tell you…i am just living my life and getting my health the best way i know…hence the blogging…it keeps me motivated, and if does the same for you, well my work here is done….

Healthy Lunch Box Ideas

I know its not healthy, but I eat at my desk…. with 4 jobs to juggle and all my content from the internet I love eating at my desk and I honestly hate buying lunch.

So I always bring my food from home…I have an excellent mother in law who concocts the most delicious dinners which helps with leftovers the next day but here are a few tips to upgrade your lunch the healthy way.

Fill out your lunchbox with the following:

  • Fruit – include fruit such as apples, grapes, plums and berries. Chopped fruit, fruit salad or dried fruit such as apricots, raisins and dates can be easily handled and eaten by children. A fruit smoothie is also a healthy option.
  • Vegetables – chopped vegetables such as carrot, celery and cucumber can be included with dips such as hummus to provide a nutritious snack. Cherry tomatoes, sliced peppers, baby corn and sugar snap peas are great for adding colour and are easy for young children to eat.
  • Desserts – fruit can be added to low-sugar jelly, or mixed in with natural yoghurt for a tasty dessert. Yoghurt drinks or small pots of custard or rice pudding can top up calcium intake and provide an alternative to more sugary or fatty options. If you like cakes and biscuits, try varieties such as hot-cross buns, scones and malt loaf. Include your favourite cake once in a while, but keep the portion small.
  • Variety is key to keeping lunchboxes appetising and appealing. Sandwich fillings can be packed with salad to add colour and nutrients, and accompanied by low-fat nutritious options such as lean meat, fish, egg and low-fat cheese.
  • Adding a treat every now and then is fine – try fun-size chocolate bars, snack-sized packets of biscuits and sweets to keep portions small and the calorie, fat and sugar content low.
  • Fruit and cereal bars are great for breakfast at the desk…
  • i mix a selection of pistachios, almonds and walnuts- my fave nuts- in a ziplock bag and snack on them throughout the day as Storebought mixes are expensive and odnt have the nuts i like
  • A colleague at work- Kamal Kaur- also makes her own dry fruit and nuts mixededition which helps her beat sugar lows…
  • or drink cups of green tea whenever you can…it increases your metabolism and burns fat

Have a happy healthy week….
